McDermott was chosen by the Denver Nuggets with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NBA draft on June 26, 2014. During his tenure as an assistant coach at North Dakota from 1989 to 1994, Doug McDermott helped the Bison win five straight NCAA Division II playoffs. After that, he took over as head coach at Wayne State College, a Division II school, where he spent six seasons with a record of 116 victories and 53 defeats.

McDermott took over as North Dakota State’s head coach in April 2000. He was in charge there for one season, ending with a 15–11 record. After that, in 2001, he relocated to Northern Iowa, his alma university, where he served as head coach for five seasons, compiling a 90–63 record. During this time, Northern Iowa participated in the 2004, 2005, and 2006 NCAA Tournaments in addition to winning the Missouri Valley Conference championship in 2004.

2010 saw McDermott leave Iowa State to take a position as head coach at Creighton. He reportedly had a ten-year contract, and Creighton produced some great results when he was there. Despite being viewed as a rebuilding year, Creighton finished the 2021–22 season with a 20–10 regular-season record and a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
